What is the motivation behind Modius?
Helping people has always been a key motivator for me. Throughout my career as a Doctor and Neuroscientist, I was able to see first-hand the tremendous potential that science and technology had when they were considered together.
As a company, we see obesity as the epidemic of our generation which affects over 2 billion people globally. Many people don’t realise that body weight is something that is controlled by the brain and so we recognised the need for a positive solution that makes it easier for people to improve their health through weight loss.
As a result, this led to us launching Modius in 2017 which is an entirely new way for a consumer to target weight loss. It has transformed the process for thousands of people by reducing their appetite and cravings, making losing weight easier and more enjoyable overall.
What has been the highlight of your business journey?
When we first launched Modius to the world in August 2017, our first weight loss target was getting our first person to self-report a 5% reduction in their body weight, which is roughly 10lbs. As a team we were delighted to see our first group reach and surpass this level.
Today, we have over 2,000 people who have already averaged 10lbs weight loss, which is extremely exciting! It never gets old hearing how Modius has been the missing piece that has kickstarted a customer’s weight loss journey.
And what’s been the biggest challenge?
Developing a product that introduces the world to an entirely new approach to weight loss presented us with the challenge of getting our first customers to buy and actually use their Modius headset regularly.
As a team, we knew we had created a fantastic product that could really help people but getting others to trust us, use it and ask them to find a way to fit it into their busy lives was definitely an initial worry. Fast forward 15 months, we are thrilled to have thousands of customers using Modius and reporting successful weight loss results.
How do you stay fit and healthy?
My top priority is my sleep. The goal is to get 8 hours every night.
Without proper sleep, you are far more likely to make bad nutritional choices such as high sugary snacks. Also, having more energy makes it much easier to be active, even if that’s going for a walk or just a short gym session. No matter what way you look at it, your chances of being healthy are significantly higher if you regularly get a good night’s sleep.
In a nutshell your philosophy is:
“Maintain forward momentum”. I like to apply this to everything I do.
It can be difficult looking at the next big challenge ahead, but I make sure that I am enthusiastic about getting there. Even if it’s slower than I would like, I still take it one day at a time.
I find that this philosophy can be applied to almost everything, but it is especially true about weight loss. Too often people try to do everything in a 6-week-blast instead of looking at the big picture. Ultimately, they burn out, grind to a stop, then fall back to where they were before. Instead of focusing on the short term, it’s much better to think about where you want to be one year from now. Planning something that you can keep moving forward with in the long term is far more likely to be successful.
What does 2019 hold for Modius?
The biggest goal for Modius is to have our headsets available on prescription. If all goes to plan, we love would to have this ready for the end of 2019.
